Endeavour at Ostend in 2015 |
Along with other Dunkirk Little Ships we have been invited to Ostende at Anchor from May 10th to 13th. This is an exciting event with 150 boats from all parts of the North Sea taking part. You can see and talk to those who preserve our maritime heritage, and watch demonstrations of ship building, plus enjoy music and good food on the quaysides.
This year commemorates the 100 anniversary of HMS Vindictive a cruiser which took part in a raid on Zeebrugge in April 1918 . On 23 April 1918 she was in fierce action at Zeebrugge when she went alongside the mole and her upperworks were badly damaged by gunfire. Her Captain, Alfred Carpenter was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions during the raid.
She was sunk as a blockship at Ostende during a second raid in May 1918. HM Motor Launch 254 picked up 38 survivors of Vindictive's 55 crewmen. The ship’s Commander Alfred Godsal was killed.
The wreck was raised on 16 August 1920 and subsequently broken up. The bow section has been preserved in Ostende harbour serving as a memorial. One of Vindictive's 7.5inch howitzers was acquired and preserved by the Imperial War Museum.
Endeavour will sail to Ipswich with ADLS boats to be moored near the town centre from May 25th to 28th.
On June 21st we shall be holding the summer reception at Osborne's in the Old Town. We hope to have The Shantymen to sing for us while we enjoy the food and the atmosphere of a summer evening.
On September 1st and 2nd we shall be at Hampton Court for the Veterans Cruise. The trip upriver through London gives a unique view of changes to the capital's skyline.
After this cruise Endeavour will be down in the Old Town on 9th September for Leigh Regatta.
In addition we hope to arrange trips from Bradwell Marina to Radio Caroline again.
