Our New Joint Presidents
The Leigh-on-Sea Endeavour Trust is delighted to announce that Graham Osborne (left in the photo above) and Andrew Lawrence (right), owners and operators of Osborne Bros shellfish merchants have agreed to take up the position joint Presidents for the Trust.
Cousins Graham and Andrew are the fifth generation of Osbornes to run the family business in Leigh, which currently comprises the café opposite the Crooked Billet, the fishmongers in Elm Road and the fishmonger and cockle processing factory on Cockle Shed Row.
The Trust had not had a President since the murder of Southend West MP David Amess in 2021.
It is well known that Renown joined five other Leigh boats, including Endeavour, in rescuing men from Dunkirk in May 1940, and that she was tragically destroyed by a sea mine while being towed back to England. Three members of the family, skipper Harry Noakes, engineer Frank Osborne, deckhand Leslie 'Lukie' Osborne, (all cousins) as well as naval rating Harold Porter from Birmingham lost their lives.
Since her restoration, Endeavour has always represented the six boats and the heroism and sacrifice of their crews, as well as the wider Leigh fishing community, so to have this further reinforced through another bond to the family that gave so much—Trevor Osborne being a long-time committee member— is something we regard as extremely important in ensuring Endeavour’s links to the local community.
Osborne Bros also becomes a sponsor of the Trust, as does Mike’s Boatyard, the marine engineering and project support service based in the Old Town, and we are extremely grateful to them both for their support.
