Summer Reception 2024

On Friday, 14th June the Trust hosted its annual Summer Social at its regular venue of  Osborne Bros on Billet Wharf. Entertainment was from the always entertaining Hoy Shanty Crew.

The Summer Social is an opportunity for our members to get together to enjoy local seafood and each other’s company with Endeavour sitting dressed overall on her mooring nearby. With high water at 1900, members could really enjoy seeing her at her very best.

It will hardly have escaped notice that June 2024 has been far from summery for the most part, with tales of blankets being dragged out of cupboards and even the heating being put on, but while it could hardly be compared to some of the excellent weather we’ve enjoyed at past receptions, it was at the better end of what we’ve had recently.

Fifty two people attended, including a group of ten from Southend Rugby Club, and four from our friends at The Leigh News.

The new chairman, Peter Wexham, welcomed everyone and went on to pay tribute to long-term member Mo Deal, whose death was announced recently, and who had played a large part in the boat’s restoration back in the early 2000s. His daughter Gillian (an enthusiastic member) travelled from Sussex to join us for the evening.

As ever, the food, a choice of fish & chips, chicken goujons & chips, or a scampi & chips seafood platter, was first rate and received many compliments. The Hoy Shanty Crew,  performed a number of songs from their repertoire including Day Trip to Southend, Drunken Sailor (led by the Trust’s Alan Barttram) and a rendition of perhaps the most unlikely number one hit of recent years, the whaling song, Wellerman.

Later on, Eileen Harris, President of the Leigh Lions, presented Peter with a cheque for £1,300 being a donation from the proceeds of the recent Leigh-on-Sea Shanty Weekend that they’d organised.

The evening’s raffle also raised a very respectable £180 for the Trust’s coffers—thank you to everyone that participated and everyone that donated a prize.

Thank you to everyone that came along and made this such good fun — we look forward to seeing you again next year!
